Mariya Davis Outbound Student Nagpur, India
Dr. Ravi Waikar Visiting Rotarian Nagpur, India |
INDIA DAY AT CSRP and SENIOR OF THE MONTH End of month and John Congemi shows up for a free breakfast. Gotta feel sorry for him having to beg this way. Guess his being outside with a cup of pencils to sell gives him that tan! :-)
John gave us the monthly update about Douglas and upcoming budget cuts. He also reported that Douglas had way more SAT tests given than any other school in Broward - Douglas is having a great year, as usual.
John then introduced this month's Senior of the month - Jon Fistal. T In addition to an outstanding career at Douglas as a debater, having won the Outstanding Debate Award he is one of the top 100 high school debaters in the State of Florida.. He has also been quite involved in the Student Government at Douglas, this year being the Senior Class President. Jon also started a service project called "Hoops for Hopes" raising money for Special Olympics - last year raising $2,500 and being recognized as a "Gold VIP Sponsor". He has also been recognized by a local TV station with a "Spirit of South Florida" award for his efforts to create a huge book of condolences in memory of the students killed at Virginia Tech. Jon has been awarded a "Service Scholarship", only one of ten, to FSU.
We had a visiting Rotarian today - Ravi Waikar and his wife and daughter. The Waikar's have relatives in Parkland (his neice is a member of Douglas' Interact club) and they are physicians from Nagpur, India. Ravi gave us some information about his club, which is very active in charitable events, and the city of Nagpur which is in the exact center of India. It was very appropriate that they visited us today because...
Our speaker today was Mariya Davis, our outbound exchange student next year to Nagpur, India!! In addition to telling us about her life and background (having moved here from the snow and cold of Canada) she impressed us, and our guests, with some Hindi she is learning for her year abroad.
Great meeting and really showed the international
nature of Rotary.
