HARVEST DRIVE and NEW MEMBER - RANDY GODARD
Fresh off a very enjoyable evening of karaoke and Romanian slivovitz at the Baranowski home Eagle Trace was packed to the rafters today - maybe because of our program, maybe because of our new to be member. In addition to Doug and Debbie Maymon making a quasi-official visit we had members from the Weston and Coral Springs clubs, John Congemi from Douglas and two members of the Douglas Key Club and their advisor.
First order of business was Pres Drew inducting our newest member, Randy Godard under the classification of Law-International. Randy's first introduction to Rotary was in Londrina, Brazil and his first effort to join was thwarted by trying to join a club with too many lawyers! We, of course, have too many lawyers, but we don't care! :-) As in house counsel for Johnson and Johnson he was transferred from the mid-west to Latin America (by that he means Miami) After a short while he and his family moved to Coral Springs, which they thoroughly enjoy. Randy and his wife have 5 kids and they are still trying to count all the grandchildren. We gladly welcome him among our ranks.
The program today was about the Harvest Drive which was started in Weston about 15 years ago by Renee Herman, and it has grown exponentially. What started as a one person crusade to help needy families has grown to a rather successful campaign at Country Lakes Elementary School and Western High School in Weston. And now, in addition to just food items they distribute clothing, toys and bicycles to needy families, and have taken on Family Central as one of their beneficiaries. In addition to Renee was Patti Bradley, a self described "worker bee" and members of the Douglas Key Club who will be assisting our club in setting up a parallel program here in the Coral Springs - Parkland area. The goal for distribution is November 13th and 14th.
