IDENTITY THEFT

This morning we had light attendance due to the long holiday weekend, but an attentive group nonetheless. Prez Todd reminded the assembled of important dates upcoming: Bowl-a-thon, Prospective Member Wine & Cheese, District Conference, Dolphins Game Outing and more – it’s a busy fall!

Our guest speaker was Christopher Smith, Community Outreach Specialist with RBC Bank (USA). His topic was identity theft – how to minimize your risk and what to do if you are a victim. Identity theft affects more than 7 million people annually. Smith advises that you obtain a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once a year, laddering them every 4 months, so that you can review for accuracy and check for unauthorized transactions.

If you are a victim, act quickly and rationally and:

· Contact all creditors for accounts that have been used or opened fraudulently

· Notify ALL credit reporting agencies

· File a police report

· File a report with the FTC

For a free annual credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com . To reach the FTC, call 1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338) or visit www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
