MATCHING GRANT

DOUGLAS SENIOR OF THE MONTH

A new academic year has started and a new face introducing our Seniors of the Month.  Ty Thompson, Intern Principal at Douglas gave us an update at what is going on at MSD and then introduced our first Senior of the Year for 3009 - 2010.

Calvin Thomas has a 3.8 average, is a member of the football team and a member of the national honor society.  Is spends a considerable amount of time doing service work at Angel House of Comfort and will be attending Duke University in the fall, hoping for a medical career.

Our own Dr. Jerry Sussman discovered a need and went on a mission.  He realized that there was an absence of trauma care facilities in Israel  and further realized that through Rotary's grant programs that situation could be rectified.  So with the assistance of 6990 Rotary Grant Matching Grant Administrator Brad Vogt, Jerry orchestrated arranging for a grant of $12,000 to buy equipment for the Rabin Center in Peta Tikva, Israel - with financial assistance of the Rotary Club in the same town.  The bulk of the money came from Jerry's Southwest Center, which donated $5,000 to our foundation to enable the match by Rotary.

Brad went on to describe the grant options available to clubs.  There is the simplified grant, which is approved at the district level.  This year there is $33,000 available from the district for such grants, which comes from a portion of the money the district donated to the Rotary Foundation three years ago.

There is also the Matching Grant program - more involved as it requires funding from two clubs from different countries, the total of which is matched by RI.
