ROTARY FOUNDATION TEACHING GRANT and SENIOR OF THE MONTH
There was a surprise announcement at the beginning of the meeting. Our Secretary and soon to be President Elect Paula stated that she and husband Michael are expecting a future Rotarian. Now of course this announcement was made just before she started collecting Happy Dollars - and this announcement raised many such dollars of course. So it remains to be seen if this was a really good fund raising scam. It should become obvious in the future :-) Congratulations to the Tiers.
This month's Senior of the Month is Brandon Steg. He has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Eagles football team. He has a full scholarship to, and will attend UConn in the fall.
Our speaker today is an old friend, Dr. Terrell Manyak, member of the Davie Cooper City Club. Not that he has been here a lot - it is just that he is old.
Terrell was the recipient of a district Rotary Foundation Teaching Grant which gave him the chance to return to South Africa, where he had been in the Peace Corps. So he and his wife Marlene packed up and moved to Uganda for a year, and while his assignment was to teach at a university there, they spent many hours traveling the back roads of the country to visit out of the way towns and villages to study the governmental structure used. And Marlene was active as well, reorganizing the local library to make it more kid friendly, and establishing a session on weekends where kids could come and learn to sing and dance. They later found out that some kids walked 5 miles each Saturday to come to these sessions.
Terrell showed a film produced by one of his students which outlined his year in South Africa - a great bit of memorabilia.
