city having won the Florida Governor's "Sterling Award" twice,
and the first governmental agency to do so. The Department
is accredited both by the State and nationally. Here is a
report of the meeting prepared by Gloria:
On Tuesday, Feb 10, our Club hosted Coral Springs Police Chief,
Roy Arigo. Although his topic, Crime in Coral Springs, might put
one off, his quiet demeanor and professional presentation
grasped the audience’s attention.
Burglary – what to do and what not to do when you leave your
home or car. Child kidnapping, a very timely subject, was
discussed. How do we prepare our children if they are approached
by a stranger ? What should they do ? Chief Arigo was very
candid in his responses. He suggested that children be told to
scream and yell and run like the dickens. The more noise they
make, the less likely it would be for the perpetrator to stick
around.
White collar crime --- Identity theft, credit card theft were
also discussed. He had a few suggestions on how one might avoid
becoming a victim and he advised that we should pay more
attention to our personal credit history and stay on top of our
monthly billings. The sooner we become aware of an error, the
more likely we will be to avoid disaster.
Gangs --- Are there gangs in Coral Springs ? Yes, we have gang
members in Coral Springs but not to the degree some may have you
think. The Police Dept. became aware of gang involvement several
years ago and have taken steps to curb the threat to the
community.
Chief Arigo ‘s presentation was received most positively by the
membership and he will be invited back to address the group in
the future |
