State of the City - Coral Springs
Senior of the Month
The golf tournament is behind us, and we
are back to the regular drill. But that is a good thing.
The speaker today was Mayor Scott Brook
of Coral Springs, and the bulk of the discussion was a subject on every
Floridian's mind - real property taxes and budgetary concerns related to
those taxes. While the city does have a surplus this year, if some
of the proposals being floated around pass the city could have as much as
a 12% decrease in tax revenues. The city is taking steps to explore
revenue sources to replace any shortfall. The Mayor invited all
members of the community to approach him and members of the commission,
each of whom have office hours at city hall - a first for the city.
John Congemi was here to present the
final Senior of the Year at Douglas for 2006 - 2007. The year is
wrapping up next week with graduation, and the prospect for good FCAT
scores seems to be bleak. He noted that the scores have not yet been
released - much slower than in years past. He also indicated that he
was loosing 5 teachers who can no longer afford to live in this area.
He applauded the idea that the city is investigating - low income housing
for teachers.
Senior of the Month was Twyon Martin, a
standout on the Douglas High Football team who has been awarded a four
year scholarship to University of Connecticut where he will be studying
pharmacy. In addition to football he also participated in track and
basketball. He said he ran the 400 yard event - ONCE!
