ROTARACT

Our guest speakers this morning were from the Rotaract Club, University of Miami. Jarrod Matthei, Dipesh Patel, and Samira Sami – all UM students in various medical field concentrations – gave an excellent overview of their Rotaract club’s successful growth and many projects. The subject of today’s presentation was “Bridging the Gap: Peace by Peace, The Nutrition Initiative for Haiti.”

UM’s Rotaract Club has taken on an ambitious project, seeking to raise $125,000 for the purchase of equipment for the manufacture and distribution of Akamil in the Central Plateau of Haiti. Akamil is a grain and nut cereal-like product that can be supplemented to deliver nutritional support for improving Haitian healthcare. The Rotaract Club is partnering with Project Medishare, a non-profit organization founded by a team of UM physicians, to make the Akamil production facility in Haiti a reality. They are asking for the support and backing of our 52 Rotary clubs, District 6990, RI Foundation grants, and Haitian Rotarians, as well as private contributors, to reach their goal. We wish these outstanding young people great success in achieving their goal of combating the pervasive malnutrition affecting Haitian children, pregnant women, the ill, and auto-immune compromised.
