Take Stock in Children

Mentoring Program

Ena Rottblatt, the Mentor Coordinator for "Take Stock in Children" spoke today about a program whereby school kids with potential but limited financial wherewithal are identified in the sixth grade as possible candidates for this program.  Each child is given application forms to be completed by the child and the family to determine eligibility, and if accepted into the program, a mentor is assigned to the child from that point until the time the child graduates from high school, and thereafter a scholarship is provided to a two year school and then they finish at a four year state university.  Mentors meet with the kids for one hour weekly at the school, and are to provide guidance, encouragement, support and generally be a positive force in the child's life.  Each child may have more than one mentor, and in such case the mentors will work as a team.   The kids must stay crime and drug free and maintain a minimum 2.0 average.  This program intends to make college education available to those who otherwise would not have it available to them due to financial limitations.  Funding for the program is a joint venture between the Florida Prepaid Tuition program and corporate and private sponsorships.  Mentors are always needed and the organization can be reached at 954-712-1794.  It is a long term commitment with a 97% success rate!
