Get Out the Vote We had the privilege of having Chris Helfin from the City of Coral Springs present, for the first time, a program developed by the City to encourage voter turnout at municipal (as well as other) elections. Currently the city elections are held in March, and this coming election will elect a new mayor and two new commissioners. Studies have shown that when there are only city elections (as opposed to county or national elections, which are held in November) the voter turnout is abysmal. So the city is trying to get out the vote, for several reasons. First, the importance of the election. After all 3 of 5 representatives are being elected, and due to term limits all three will be new members of the commission. Second, there is a city charter amendment to move elections to November to put them in line with the more attended elections. There was a lot of discussion about how, while county state and national elections garner more attention, it is the local representatives who have a greater impact on one's day to day live. A truly informative and great program. And as seen at the left, or new digs are really great. Gloria, is a stupor most of the meeting, kept saying "I can't believe what a great job they did in this room. I can't believe what a great job they did in this room". She is headed for the home, right after she gets back from her next vacation. |
